14.04.2023
Farrell is honoured to have been named winner of the Medium Category in the prestigious 2023 Irish Business Design Challenge. Organised by Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI), the challenge recognises businesses that embed design thinking to deliver positive economic and environmental change. Announced at an awards ceremony in Trinity College Dublin, the accolade was presented by Minister of State Neale Richmond, acknowledging the company’s innovative ‘Do More With Less’ project.

The award-winning project centred around reimagining the Arthur Edwards-designed Crannac Chair, a staple in Irish public offices for over 40 years. Partnering with the OPW and Atlantic Technological University, Farrell undertook a process of reverse engineering and refurbishment to breathe new life into this iconic design. ‘Do More With Less’ represents a practical application of circular economy principles—extending product lifespan, reducing waste and honouring Irish design heritage.

Tom Watts, Head of Design at DCCI, noted: “It is an honour to be able to recognise these companies for the amazing work they have done to transform their businesses into such models of sustainable and circular design.” Suzy O’Keefe, Head of Digital & Communications at DCCI, added: “Each of these companies highlighted a deep understanding of how design thinking can be used to increase a business’s efficiency and the impact this can have on an economic and environmental level.”

This year’s Irish Business Design Challenge attracted 107 entries, with Farrell selected as the top performer in the Medium Category. The ‘Do More With Less’ project exemplifies how design thinking can enhance product lifecycle, reduce environmental impact and deliver long-term value.
